Repair of cargo tank with duplex steel
Orskov swiftly handled an imploded cargo tank on a PSV during dry-docking.
At Orskov Yard, we have the flexibility and experience to handle even the most complex unforeseen challenges.
When the Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) was on route to Frederikshavn for its 10-year class survey, the crew discovered severe damage to one of her cargo tanks, which is used for methanol and acidic special products.
The tank was made of 316LN stainless steel, which was not readily available in stock from suppliers. As a certified specialist in maritime welding, Orskov Yard came up with an alternative solution: using duplex steel to repair the damaged tank. The two materials have different chemical compositions and properties, requiring specific welding techniques to ensure a high-quality and durable weld. Nearly 10 tonnes of duplex steel were used to repair the trapezoid-shaped cargo tank.
While planning the dry-docking, Orskov Yard prepared the necessary documentation for the welding operation and obtained class approval from DNV, enabling the repair job to commence immediately upon arrival.
Offshore shipowners frequently choose Orskov Yard for service and repair due to our high quality, flexibility, and short delivery time. In this case, we executed a comprehensive dry-docking, including the overhaul of four thrusters and a propeller, while an immensely complex cargo tank repair was carried out.
Since 2014, we have been certified ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001. We continuously work to improve our management systems, processes, and overall performance regarding quality, environmental management, and occupational health and safety.
