Overhauling a 400-ton offshore crane requires skilled personnel and state-of-the-art facilities

Viking Neptun, an impressive DP3 Offshore Construction Vessel (OCV), has just completed its 10-year class survey at Orskov Yard.

As a ship operating heavy loads in challenging environments, an OCV is distinguished by its integration of cutting-edge technology and complex mechanical systems. Viking Neptun has been serving in the offshore wind sector for several years and is owned by DEME Group and managed by Eidesvik Offshore ASA, who chose Orskov Yard because of our vast experience in maintaining highly advanced equipment on specialized offshore vessels.

The dry-docking included load testing and complete overhauls of two advanced offshore cranes, including the 5-year survey of a 400-ton active heave-compensated (AHC) crane. We conducted the crane overhauls in close collaboration with the maker, MacGregor, who was represented by supervisors on-site in Frederikshavn.

Carrying out a multifaceted service job like this requires careful planning, skilled personnel – and state-of-the-art facilities. As shown in the photos, the 146m long and 31m wide Viking Neptun presented no challenge to Orskov Yard’s Dock 4. While the ship was in dock, all its thrusters were overhauled in our workshop by yard personnel and Brunvoll AS supervisors.

Upon Viking Neptun’s departure from the dock, we immediately started preparing for the arrival of the next ship in Dock 4, another offshore vessel scheduled for planned maintenance starting the following day.
